| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a dramatic maritime encounter commemorating Juan Pérez's 1774 expedition along the Pacific Northwest coast. In the central field, traditional Haida dugout canoes, manned by indigenous paddlers, approach the Spanish frigate Santiago under full sail, evoking the first recorded contact between European explorers and the indigenous peoples of the Queen Charlotte Islands. The composition is rendered in high relief with fine engraving detail in the rigging, hull, and canoe prows. The dual dates 1774 and 1999 flank the upper field, marking the 225th anniversary of the expedition, while the legend CANADA · DOLLAR arcs along the lower periphery. The design was engraved by Stan Witten. |
