Niue has operated as a vehicle for themed collector coinage since the 1990s, licensing its sovereign issuing authority to foreign minting houses — primarily the Polish Mint — which produces the bulk of these wildlife and animal series pieces under contract. The Javanese is a longhaired variant of the Oriental Shorthair, developed in the United States in the latter half of the twentieth century — not Indonesia, despite the name.
