Part of a long-running Cook Islands micro-gold program that exploited the territory's mint arrangement with New Zealand to issue collectible bullion in fractional sizes. The .99999 fineness — five nines — is exceptional, exceeding the standard four-nine gold used by most sovereign mints, including the Royal Canadian Mint's Maple Leaf at the time this piece was struck.
