Reverse description The reverse of this rectangular proof coin presents a dramatic high-relief depiction of Icarus, the figure from Greek mythology, shown as a muscular male nude in full stride with large feathered wings fully extended against a mirror-like field. In the background to the left, a large circular solar disc decorated with a Greek meander (key) border dominates the composition, evoking the mythological sun that melted Icarus's waxen wings. Several feathers are shown falling away from the wings, capturing the moment of his legendary downfall. The legend ICARUS is inscribed in bold serif capitals along the lower portion of the field, and the engraver's mark N appears at lower right.
