Part of the Royal Tudor Beasts series issued under the Perth Mint's licensing arrangements with Tuvalu, this coin draws on the ten heraldic beasts that flanked the canopy at Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation at Westminster Abbey — themselves reproductions of the stone beasts carved for Henry VIII at Hampton Court. The series used Tuvalu as the issuing authority largely because Australian coins could not carry the Perth Mint's colored or novelty finishes under domestic regulations at the time.
