Niue's wildlife coin program, operated largely through the New Zealand Mint under licensing arrangements, produced dozens of issues in the early 2010s targeting the collector rather than any circulating need. The Eurasian Otter series drew on growing conservation interest following population recoveries in parts of Western Europe after near-elimination through hunting and water pollution in the mid-twentieth century.
