Niue has operated as a prolific licensing hub for commemorative issues since the 1990s, contracting with private mints to produce coins that bear its name while targeting collector markets worldwide rather than domestic circulation. This Diana piece is squarely in that tradition — a silver-plated copper strike aimed at the memorabilia trade, not the numismatic one.
Diana died in Paris in August 1997, and the commemorative market never really closed afterward.
