Additional information

The 1987 Canadian dollar commemorates the 400th anniversary of John Davis's 1587 expedition into the strait now bearing his name — his third Arctic voyage, during which he reached approximately 72°N latitude before pack ice forced a retreat. Davis never found the Northwest Passage he was searching for, but his charts of the region remained navigational references for over a century. Two varieties exist for this issue, distinguished by whether the reverse was struck with a proof or specimen finish, hence the dual Charlton references.
