Additional information

Mindaugas remains the only king in Lithuanian history, crowned on July 6, 1253, after Pope Innocent IV granted him a royal title partly as a geopolitical lever against the Teutonic Knights and Livonian Order pressing from the north. The arrangement was fragile from the start — Mindaugas apostatized sometime before his assassination in 1263, and the Lithuanian church he nominally headed effectively dissolved with him. July 6 is now a national holiday in Lithuania.

This is the third of six coins in the series.
