Vancouver's centennial in 1986 coincided with Expo 86, the world's fair that drew over 22 million visitors to the city and briefly made it the focus of international attention. The Royal Canadian Mint issued this dollar in both proof and brilliant uncirculated finishes, accounting for the dual Charlton reference numbers. The .500 fine silver standard — the same alloy used for Canadian circulation dollars since 1968 before the switch to nickel — was retained here largely for collector continuity rather than any intrinsic metallurgical reasoning.
