Oscar Peterson was born in Montreal in 1925 and went on to record over 200 albums, win eight Grammy Awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997, and is widely regarded as one of the most technically accomplished jazz pianists of the twentieth century. The Royal Canadian Mint's decision to issue a circulating colored dollar reflects a broader program begun in the 2000s to produce collector-oriented circulation coins honoring Canadian cultural figures.
Peterson received the Order of Canada in 1984 and the Glenn Gould Prize in 1993.
