Additional information

The Bombing of Darwin on 19 February 1942 was the largest single foreign attack ever carried out on Australian soil — larger in aircraft numbers than the Pearl Harbor strike just ten weeks earlier. Japan deployed 188 aircraft in two waves, sinking eight ships in the harbour and killing at least 235 people, though the true death toll remains disputed. Australian authorities suppressed the scale of the damage for weeks to prevent civilian panic.

Niue has long issued commemorative silver dollars on behalf of other nations' histories under licensing arrangements that allow it to function as a mint-state proxy. This piece marks the 70th anniversary of the raid.
