The "Bene Merentibus" inscription — Latin for "to those who have deserved well" — has historically appeared on papal and military decorations rather than circulating coinage, giving this Niue issue an ecclesiastical oddness that sets it apart from the usual commemorative output. Niue's coin program has operated largely as a licensing arrangement since the 1990s, with designs contracted to outside mints and the island's nominal sovereignty providing the issuing authority for bullion products sold entirely to foreign collectors.
KM#899 is one of dozens of silver dollar types attributed to Niue in 2012 alone.
