| Reverse description | The central field features a large sculptural depiction of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, rendered as a standing figure holding a trident, with one foot resting on a globe, executed with selective gold printing. Inset at the lower portion of the design is a replica of an ancient Roman gold aureus struck under Emperor Vespasian: the obverse of the ancient coin shows a laureate portrait of Vespasian in profile to the right, while the reverse depicts Neptune standing with trident and foot on globe. The legends from the ancient aureus are faithfully reproduced around the inner and outer fields of the modern coin. The overall composition frames the ancient coinage within the contemporary numismatic context of the Aureus series. |
