Niue's legal tender coinage exists almost entirely as a licensing vehicle — the island's GDP would not support a domestic coin program, and these issues were struck for the collector market under New Zealand's monetary umbrella. The Aries piece is part of a twelve-coin zodiac series produced for Niue by a third-party mint, almost certainly the Valcambi or Pobjoy facilities that handled the bulk of Niue's themed silver output in this period.
KM#495 attribution places it firmly in the documented series, though mintage figures for individual zodiac signs within the set varied depending on subscription demand.
