| Additional information |
Gierymski spent much of his career outside Poland — studying in Munich, working in Rome, eventually settling in Paris — yet remained preoccupied with Warsaw street life and the margins of Polish society. His reputation collapsed after his death in Rome in 1901 and his work largely disappeared from public view until a major reattribution effort in the mid-twentieth century restored his standing as one of the most technically rigorous Polish painters of the nineteenth century.
This issue belongs to Niue's ongoing Polish Painters series, a licensing arrangement that has made the small Pacific island a vehicle for Polish cultural commemoratives with no geographic connection to the subject.
