The 2022 Commonwealth Games were held in Birmingham, England — the first time England had hosted since Manchester in 2002 — after Durban, South Africa was stripped of the rights in 2017 following funding failures. The Royal Australian Mint issued a themed dollar series around the Games, with individual coins assigned to the values promoted by the Commonwealth Games Federation. This piece draws that series toward its more politically charged end, reflecting the federation's formal inclusion commitments adopted in preceding cycles.
The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was still current at time of minting. She died in September 2022, months after these coins entered circulation.
