The "Winged Victory" in this series refers to the Nike of Samothrace, the Hellenistic marble now in the Louvre, originally carved around 190 BC and rediscovered on the island of Samothrace in 1863. Perth's choice to render it in high relief on a bullion-adjacent proof format follows a broader trend the mint pursued aggressively through the 2010s and early 2020s — competing directly with the Royal Mint and U.S. Mint for the collector-proof market by leaning into classical sculpture as subject matter.
The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was introduced in 2015 and was the last official effigy used before her death in 2022, making this 2021 issue one of the final full years of production under that portrait.
