The Great Aussie Coin Hunt series — now in its third iteration — was conceived by the Royal Australian Mint as a circulation engagement program, releasing lettered dollars through major retail partners to drive public collecting. By the third series, the novelty had somewhat worn off, and many examples were hoarded immediately rather than spending any meaningful time in trade. The "G" release joins 26 lettered coins across the run, each assigned an Australian noun or place, a format the Mint has leaned on repeatedly since the first Hunt launched in 2019.
