The Great Aussie Coin Hunt 2 was the Royal Australian Mint's follow-up to its 2019 alphabet series, which had driven an unusual wave of public coin-searching not seen in Australia since the commemorative dollar programs of the 1980s. The second run assigned each letter a different Australian animal, place, or cultural reference, distributed through general circulation via supermarket and retail partnerships — meaning these coins entered the wild through change, not collector channels.
"U" was assigned to the uluru, one of the more politically charged choices in the series given the site's formal name restoration in 2002 and ongoing access debates.
