Obverse description Sixth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, crowned and wearing a pearl drop earring and pearl necklace, engraved in high relief with selective gold gilding applied to the bust, crown, earring, and necklace against a deeply mirrored proof field. The circumferential legend reads ELIZABETH II · AUSTRALIA with the date 2020 positioned vertically at the right, all in raised Latin lettering. The engraver's initials JC appear in the lower left field. The coin's rim is highlighted with a gold-gilt border, accentuating the two-tone contrast of the gilded portrait against the polished silver field.

Additional information

The "Mob of Roos" reverse has appeared on the Australian dollar since Stuart Devlin designed it for the coin's 1984 introduction, but the gilded proof format — selectively plating the kangaroo group in .999 gold over a .999 silver field — is a relatively recent RAM production technique used to distinguish premium annual releases. At 155.575 grams, this is a five-ounce piece, a format the RAM has leaned on heavily for collector issues since the 2010s.

Ian Rank-Broadley's sixth portrait of Elizabeth II was adopted by the RAM in 2019, making 2020 only the second year of its appearance on Australian coinage before her death in 2022 rendered the entire sixth-portrait series a short run.
