Issued in anticipation of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which were ultimately postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic — making this coin's original release context obsolete before it ever reached circulation. The pad-printing process used for the coloured detail was by this point well-established at the Royal Australian Mint, first introduced on circulating commemoratives in the early 2010s.
