Additional information

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in Britain in 1824 and established its first Australian branch in Victoria in 1871, making the 150th anniversary commemorated here a specifically Australian milestone rather than a global one. The pad-printing process — a technique borrowed from industrial parts manufacturing — allows the mint to apply colour directly onto the coin surface without the limitations of traditional enamel inlay, and became a regular production tool at the RAM only in the last decade or so.
