Additional information

The Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942 was the first naval engagement in history where opposing ships never came within sight of each other — all action was conducted entirely by carrier-based aircraft. Japan's failure to take Port Moresby in that battle marked the first check to their Pacific advance, and Australian historians in particular regard it as the engagement that prevented an invasion of the Australian mainland.

Solomon Islands was still under Japanese occupation when the battle was fought in waters immediately surrounding the archipelago.
