Additional information

The Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942 was the first naval engagement in history where opposing fleets never came within sight of each other — all strikes were carried out by carrier-based aircraft. For Australia and the broader Pacific theater, the battle's strategic importance lay in stopping the Japanese seaborne advance on Port Moresby, a landing that Allied commanders believed would threaten the Australian mainland directly. Solomon Islands waters were at the center of that fight.

This issue marks the 50th anniversary of that engagement, released by a nation whose own islands were still under Japanese occupation when the battle was fought.
