Additional information

Part of the Perth Mint's "Young Collectors" series, which ran through the early 2010s and was explicitly designed to draw children into coin collecting — a demographic the Australian mint had been courting aggressively since the late 1990s through low-denomination colorized and themed issues. The marathon butterfly (Lacuna semiluna) was among several native Australian species selected for the run, chosen in part because the series doubled as informal natural history education.

Aluminium bronze circulation-spec strikes of this type were produced alongside coloured collector versions, meaning KM#1810 exists in two visually distinct states sharing the same catalog number.
