Perth Mint's annual Lunar Series II commenced in 2008, cycling through the twelve-animal zodiac on a fixed schedule that placed the Rooster in the tenth position. The series was designed to compete directly with the Royal Canadian Mint's Maple Leaf and the U.S. Mint's American Silver Eagle in the international bullion market, though Perth leaned heavily on the Chinese diaspora collector base — particularly in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong — as its primary audience.
The multiple KM references reflect distinct mintage variants: a standard bullion strike, a specimen finish, and a gilded version, each tracked separately by Krause despite sharing the same core specification.
