The date 2019 and denomination 1 DOLLAR are incorporated within the obverse legend, distributed around the portrait in the field.

Reverse description The reverse depicts a large sow in the foreground accompanied by four piglets beneath a flowering tree branch, evoking traditional Chinese artistic motifs associated with the Lunar New Year. The composition is detailed and naturalistic, with the piglets clustered close to the sow in a familial grouping. A Chinese character for Pig (猪) appears prominently above the central design in the upper field. The inscription YEAR OF THE PIG arcs along the lower portion of the field, with the additional notation AH P appearing within the design. The overall design celebrates the Year of the Pig in the Chinese lunar calendar cycle.

Additional information

Australia's lunar coin program, run through the Perth Mint, operates on a strict twelve-year cycle tied to the Chinese zodiac — meaning each animal type is a one-year issue with no repeat strikes under the same design until the cycle restarts. The Pig is the final sign in the cycle, making the 2019 release the close of the second full lunar series before the Rat began again in 2020.
