Australia's Lunar Series II, produced by the Perth Mint, runs twelve years through the full zodiac cycle — this Dog issue marks the tenth in that sequence. The series was designed partly to capture demand from Southeast Asian and Chinese diaspora collectors, a market the Perth Mint had aggressively pursued since the first Lunar Series launched in 1996.
Aluminium bronze circulation strikes for this type were produced in bulk for general release through Australia Post and Mint retail channels, while a separate silver proof program ran concurrently. KM#3496 specifically tracks the circulating commemorative version.
