Additional information

Part of Perth Mint's "Treasures of Australia" series, this issue highlights the Anakie sapphire fields of central Queensland — one of the largest sapphire deposits ever discovered, worked commercially since the 1870s and still producing today. Australian sapphires long carried a market stigma for their strong blue-to-green color shift, considered less desirable than Kashmiri or Burmese material, until heat-treatment techniques in the 1980s improved their commercial appeal and repositioned Australia as a major supplier to the global gem trade.
