| Additional information |
Tīriti Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf has operated as a predator-free open sanctuary since 1984, when the New Zealand Wildlife Service began the painstaking removal of livestock and introduced pests that had stripped the island bare. The reforestation effort — largely volunteer-driven — became one of the most closely watched ecological restoration projects in the Southern Hemisphere, with kiwi, kōkako, and takahē reintroduced to land that had been farmland within living memory.
This issue belongs to New Zealand's ongoing native wildlife dollar series, struck at the Perth Mint under contract.
