Additional information

The Solander Islands are a remote, uninhabited volcanic group off the southern coast of New Zealand's South Island, named by Cook after the botanist Daniel Solander who sailed on the Endeavour during the 1769–70 voyage. They serve as a protected nature reserve with no permanent human presence — which makes their appearance on a circulation-format coin a curiously academic choice. New Zealand's collectible dollar program has long used this format to feature obscure dependent territories and geographic features that would otherwise never merit official numismatic recognition.
