The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley, had been in circulation on Australian coinage since 1999. By 2013, the Royal Australian Mint and Perth Mint were both producing commemorative dollar issues at a pace that had accelerated sharply since the 2000s — the aluminium bronze dollar format became a reliable vehicle for anniversary and themed releases, with collector-facing mintages carefully managed to sustain secondary market demand. The 60th anniversary of the coronation, falling in June 2013, prompted parallel issues across multiple Commonwealth mints.
