Part of the Perth Mint's ongoing Treasures of Australia series, this dollar was struck to draw attention to the Bungle Bungle Range in Western Australia's Kimberley region — a formation largely unknown outside Aboriginal communities until a film crew documented it in 1983. Purnululu was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, recognized for its exceptional examples of cone karst topography. The pad-printing technique used here allowed full-color reproduction on a circulating-weight coin without the cost of enamel inlay.
