Issued following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, this coin carries the fourth and final Maklouf-era portrait in use by New Zealand at the time of her passing. The tokoeka — a flightless kiwi subspecies largely confined to Fiordland and Stewart Island — was listed as nationally vulnerable at the time of issue, making its selection for a bullion-adjacent commemorative a quiet acknowledgment of conservation priorities in New Zealand's official coinage program.
