Additional information

Issued on the 60th anniversary of the Pacific War's end, this coin marks the formal Japanese surrender of 15 August 1945 — known in Australia as VP Day, a date that carried particular weight given the country's direct exposure to Japanese bombing raids and the fall of Singapore in 1942, which shattered the assumption of British imperial protection. Australia lost over 17,000 prisoners of war to Japanese captivity, a per-capita toll among the highest of any Allied nation.

The Royal Australian Mint struck this in .999 silver rather than the standard proof alloy, a deliberate choice for the anniversary issue.
