| Additional information |
New Zealand's kiwi dollar bullion series drew collector attention partly because the North Island brown kiwi — Apteryx mantelli — was by 2006 already the subject of intensive government-backed recovery programs, with predator-free sanctuaries being established across the North Island after population surveys revealed numbers far lower than previously estimated. The species had been functionally separated into its own classification only in 2000, following genetic research that split what was once considered a single widespread species.
