| Obverse description | Fourth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, with a pearl drop earring visible. The portrait, modelled by Ian Rank-Broadley, is rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The engraver's initials 'IRB' appear below the truncation of the neck. The surrounding legend reads 'ELIZABETH II' to the upper left and 'AUSTRALIA 2002' to the right, all in raised Latin lettering along the coin's border. |

The Royal Australian Mint produced this piece during the transitional period following the 2001 centenary of Australian federation — a year that generated an unusually dense cluster of commemorative issues. The Melbourne Mint designation in the title is nominal; by 2002, the original Melbourne facility had long ceased coin production, and all Australian dollar coinage was struck at the Canberra facility in Deakin.
Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, introduced on Australian coinage in 1999, was still relatively new to the series at time of striking.
