| Additional information |
The "March of the Oliphants" dollar was struck to coincide with the release of The Return of the King, the third installment of Peter Jackson's New Zealand-filmed Lord of the Rings trilogy. New Zealand Post and the Reserve Bank issued a series of collector coins throughout the trilogy's production run, capitalizing on the country's role as Middle-earth. The oliphant sequence — filmed largely in the Twizel area of the South Island's Mackenzie Basin — became one of the most technically ambitious scenes in the production.
Struck in .925 silver to the same specifications as the standard Commonwealth proof dollar, this is a limited collector issue with no circulation release.
