Australia's Lunar coin program, running since 1996, has become one of the longer-standing annual series from the Royal Australian Mint — each year cycling through the Chinese zodiac in coordination with circulating commemorative issues. The Year of the Dog release coincided with 2018, the year of Gengxu in the sexagenary cycle, associated specifically with the Earth Dog, a combination that recurs only every sixty years.
Aluminium bronze circulation strikes from this series are frequently found in uncirculated condition, pulled from mint bags rather than spent.
