| Reverse description | A finely detailed, frosted effigy of a Little Spotted Kiwi (Apteryx owenii) occupies the centre of the reverse field, depicted in profile facing left with its characteristic long downcurved bill and bristle-like whiskers rendered in high relief. The large numeral '1' appears prominently in the lower left field, with the word 'dollar' inscribed beneath it. Stylised Maori koru spiral motifs decorate the four quadrants of the field, evoking New Zealand's indigenous artistic heritage. The inscriptions 'ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER' and 'LITTLE SPOTTED KIWI' arc along the upper periphery on either side of the design. |

| Additional information |
The little spotted kiwi (*Apteryx owenii*) is functionally extinct on the New Zealand mainland, surviving only on Kapiti Island and a handful of managed offshore sanctuaries following near-total predation by introduced stoats and rats. By 2004, the total wild population was estimated at under 1,500 birds. New Zealand's commemorative dollar program has intermittently featured endangered native fauna since the 1980s, partly as a conservation awareness instrument tied to the country's Department of Conservation funding cycles.
