Perth Mint's annual silver Koala series launched in 2007 specifically to compete with established bullion programs like the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Silver Eagle in the global investor market. Each year's reverse design changes — a deliberate strategy to encourage both collector and stacker demand simultaneously. The 2011 issue falls within the Ian Rank-Broadley obverse portrait period, the fourth effigy of Elizabeth II adopted by Australian coinage in 1998.
