The International Year of Astronomy in 2009 marked the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of a telescope for systematic celestial observation, and of Kepler's publication of Astronomia Nova. The Perth Mint used pad printing — a process borrowed from industrial product decoration — to apply color detail directly to the coin's surface, a technique it had been refining since the early 2000s for its wildlife and commemorative issues.
