Irwin died in September 2006 from a stingray barb to the heart while snorkeling at Batan Reef off Port Douglas — an injury type so rarely fatal that it caught the entire marine biology community off guard. The Royal Australian Mint issued this dollar three years later as part of its Inspirational Australians series, a program recognizing figures who had shaped the national character in the public imagination.
By 2009, Irwin's Wildlife Warriors foundation was already operating independently under Terri Irwin's direction, and the coin's release coincided with continued international interest in his conservation work rather than any formal anniversary.
