| Obverse description | The fourth portrait effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley, faces right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara rendered in fine relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the upper left periphery and AUSTRALIA 2000 along the upper right, with the engraver's initials IRB incuse below the truncation of the neck. The portrait is finely detailed with carefully modelled hair and facial features characteristic of the Rank-Broadley effigy introduced in 1998. |

A sweeping stylised wave motif in frosted relief bisects the field diagonally, separating the warship above from the denomination below. The inscription HMAS SYDNEY II appears in bold serif lettering to the upper left of the vessel. The large numeral 1 and the word DOLLAR are displayed prominently in the lower field, with a small copyright mark visible to the right of the wave.
