| Reverse description | Five gold miners of the 1860s era depicted standing on a rocky foreground, evoking the West Coast gold rush of New Zealand's South Island. The figures are rendered in varying poses, suggesting a group portrait typical of the period. The curved legend 'NEW ZEALAND GOLD RUSHES . WEST COAST' arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination 'ONE DOLLAR' appears along the lower border. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border. |

| Additional information |
Part of a six-coin commemorative series issued by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand marking the gold rushes that transformed the South Island's West Coast from near-empty bush into a boomtown corridor almost overnight. The Hokitika rush of 1865 drew tens of thousands of prospectors — at its peak, Hokitika briefly ranked among the busiest ports in Australasia by ship arrivals.
KM#293 is the specific West Coast attribution within the series, distinguishing it from the Otago and Thames issues struck in the same programme.
