Part of New Zealand's officially licensed Lord of the Rings commemorative program tied to Peter Jackson's film trilogy, this coin was released in 2003 to coincide with The Return of the King. New Line Cinema's unprecedented decision to film all three productions simultaneously in New Zealand — the first major trilogy shot that way — gave the Reserve Bank an unusually extended licensing window spanning three consecutive years of releases.
The .925 silver strikes were produced by the Royal Australian Mint under contract.
