Part of the Royal New Zealand Mint's extended licensing program with Warner Bros., this issue falls within a series commemorating the twentieth anniversary of Peter Jackson's film adaptations — productions that were themselves a significant economic event for New Zealand, with the government amending labor law in 2010 specifically to secure the production of The Hobbit films in the country. The broader Lord of the Rings shoot had already injected an estimated NZ$200 million into the local economy across 2000–2003.
Struck to one-troy-ounce .999 fineness, the coin is legal tender under the Reserve Bank of New Zealand Act, though no example will ever see a till.
