Issued to mark the centenary of Australian Federation, this coin is one of six in a state-and-territory tribute series, each honoring a different member of the federation. The South Australian piece recognizes a colony that entered federation somewhat reluctantly — its delegates pushed hard at the 1897–98 conventions for equal Senate representation regardless of population, a condition that became foundational to the final constitutional structure. Adelaide's demands, in other words, shaped the document the centenary was celebrating.
The pad-printing technique used for the color application was still relatively new to Australian commemorative coinage in 2001.
