The 2001 dollar was issued to mark the centenary of Australian federation, commemorating the proclamation of the Commonwealth on 1 January 1901. The Royal Australian Mint produced several variants that year, including a circulating commemorative and a series of special privy-marked issues tied to each of the six states and two territories. The sheer volume of federation-themed coinage released in 2001 — across multiple denominations and formats — made it one of the most ambitious commemorative programs the Mint had undertaken to that point.
KM#534 is the standard circulation issue. The Schön 610.1 designation distinguishes it from the privy-marked state variants catalogued separately.
